The President of the International Olympic Committee Thomas Bach, the Ukrainian PM Arseniy Yatsenyuk and Ukraine’s President of the National Olympic Committee Serhiy Bubka held a discussion over the race of Lviv in becoming the host city of Winter Games of 2022.

Due to the economic and political circumstances in Ukraine, Lviv withdrew from the competition. However, the parties agreed on Lviv making a comeback to continue the race on holding the sport competition in 2026.

“The preliminary evaluation by the IOC’s working group found that the Lviv bid offered huge potential for future development,” Thomas Bach stated. “In my discussions with the Ukrainian Prime Minster and NOC President, we concluded that it would be extremely difficult to pursue the 2022 bid under the current circumstances, but that a future bid would make sense for Ukraine and Ukrainian sport.”

At the same time, according to the Ukrainian PM, a bid for 2026 would be a great opportunity for country’s economy to recover and give huge benefits for its society.

In addition, the Ukrainian Olympic Committee representative Serhiy Bubka thanked the IOC for understanding and for the financial and moral support to Ukrainian athletes from all parts of the country.

As it was earlier reported, Ukraine applied for holding the Olympic Games in 2022. The host city will be elected in July 31, 2015, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
